Barack Obama and Race

With the 2008 Election coming up quickly, there will always be the debate between having the first American female president or having the first Black president. For the democratic candidate, Barack Obama, this issue will always be addressed, maybe sometime not in his favor. In his speech given in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Obama told the listeners that he is the son of a black man and a white woman and has been raids most of his life by his white grandmother. He then includes that he has relatives of all races and he is married to an African American woman who has the blood of a slave running through her veins.
Knowing he will face the dilemma of being the first black candidate to run for president, Obama reassures himself and says that he has already won states that have some of the whitest people living in them. Obama hopes that these people are “hungry” for unity and will support him the whole way through. Obama has been accused of only running for president solely on the desire to end racial segregation in politics today.
Obama knew that there would be a lot of controversy regarding racial tension in this election, but it has recently taken a different twist. Many people may think his intentions or his thoughts are wrong, but it is their job to become more open and welcome to the ideas of your not so typical presidential candidate. To me, I feel that Obama should continue to keep fighting strong regardless of what people may claim his intensions to be. I think it is great what he is going and people should respect the fact that he is really trying to unify all the people and show that even if he is a man of color, he is a hard working man of color who wants to bring the best for the United States.
