Obama's Political View

Barack Obama will likely be the democratic nomination for the Democratic Party in the 2008 election. Through his political background, public comments, and voting record his stance on political issues has become clear. Some of Obama’s political views that will be discussed are his economic, social and foreign policies.
One of Obama’s main economic views is that he is neutral on unrestricted free trades. He will push for a trade policy that expands foreign markets to support and create good American jobs. He will vote for policy and use trade agreements that ensure fair trade and improves environmental standards. With this he will vote against things such as the Central American Trade Agreement which fails to follow these standards. Many people argue against this policy by stating how this will halt our nation’s globalization by limiting our trades to such high standards.
Another political issue that is very closely examined in a political race is the candidate’s stance on crime and punishment. Obama has a view unlikely many of his fellow democrats when it comes to the death penalty. He actually supports the death penalty and his view was seen when he stated, “I believe the death penalty is appropriate in certain situations. There are extraordinary heinous crimes, terrorism, the harm of children which it may be appropriate. Another stance on crime and punishment is that Obama strongly supports hate crime legislation. Obama also opposes relaxing drug laws and supports a need for more drug enforcement.
A candidate’s position on taxes and budget is another is that many people look at when choosing a candidate. Obama’s views towards taxes are very much in line with liberal thinking. He strongly supports an increase in taxes for the wealthiest American and a decrease in taxes for middle income families. These views can be validated when Obama proposed $80 billion in tax cuts for middle income families. Because of this Obama opposes the flat tax rate in America. Some of his other views on taxes and budget are; opposes limiting taxes on estates after an individual’s death, supports the elimination of the marriage penalty, opposes the elimination of the Alternative Minimum Tax, and he opposes the reduction of taxes on capital gains.
How a candidate feels on certain issues makes him either a liberal, conservative, or somewhere in between. Many people vote strictly based on the candidates political party while many others look deeper into how the candidates feel are certain issues. Every day the candidates are scrutinized to see how they stand towards certain issues. Above are just a few of candidate Barack Obama’s political views on some of the important issues.
