Obama's plan for Iraq

Since the beginning of the possibility of war, Obama was a vocal opponent. He spoke and continues to speak out against the war in Iraq. He believes that it was too much of a risk because the war would come to “an occupation of undetermined length, with undetermined costs, and undetermined consequences.” There were too many unknowns pertaining to the war and now he wants to fix it. Obama introduced a plan to evacuate all soldiers from Iraq with a phased withdrawal of the American troops that are currently fighting in Iraq. His plan is to remove one to two combat troops each month and continue to do so until all troops are home safely. While taking the troops out, he will leave some behind to ensure the safety of our embassy and diplomats and also to ensure that al Qaeda does not attempt to build a base in Iraq while the troops are leaving. Obama believes the best way for Iraqi’ leaders to take responsibility for their future, the best way for them to feel as if it is up to themselves and not to rely on the United States, is for the United States to make it clear that we are leaving them to decide their own future. However, Obama is making sure that they will not be left all alone. He will engage representatives from all levels of Iraqi society to come up with a new accord on Iraq’s Constitution and government. Obama also is going to involve Iraqi neighbors to ensure that the borders of Iraq are secured. I believe the thought of what Obama is trying to achieve is a good one and we need to bring our troops home. We have lost many good people in Iraq and a lot of our country’s money that could be going towards problems of our own country. It is true that we cannot take all our soldiers at once and I think that Obama has a good idea taking various troops out at certain times of the month over a proposed period of time of sixteen months. I do not know how reliable the sixteen month deadline, but I do believe in his method.
