Obama's Abortion Extremism

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/01/AR2008040102197.html

This article, written by Michael Gerson, discusses where Senator Barak Obama stands on abortion. Gerson says that Obama is taking abortion to the extreme for various reasons. I agree with Gerson on his claims. Obama seems like he is misleading to many Americans about his views on abortion.

First off, Obama did not want to ban the partial-birth abortion which is a late-term abortion method which ends pregnancy by removing a fetus. I think Obama has an extreme view on this as well because to me, partial-birth abortion is murdering a baby. This is a sick and very cruel thing and should not be legal. I agree with Gerson on this issue and strongly feel that Obama is wrong because he opposed banning this type of abortion.

Secondly, Obama was not in favor of a bill like the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act which allows babies to live if they were accidentally still alive by abortion. Again, I feel that Obama was wrong in opposing this bill and should let innocent infants stay alive. Also, Gerson finds Obama’s views extreme because he said that he wouldn’t want his daughters to be faced with an unwanted pregnancy and to be “punished with a baby.” His view on this seems very harsh because having a baby is one of the miracles of life and one should be thankful to be able to have one. I would argue that his views seem quite negative and offending because in some ways, he sees a baby as a punishment when rather many people and myself would see a baby as a gift from God.

Abortion is a very concerning and prevalent issue in today’s society. According to this article, it says that a majority of Americans oppose abortion but only support it in certain circumstances such as rape or to save the mother’s life. It also says that only a small amount of Americans are against abortion “under every circumstance.” I am a Democrat who strongly believes that abortion is wrong no matter what the circumstances are. I feel that abortion is the murdering of an unborn child and denies all rights to the fetus. If a woman was raped or cannot afford to have her baby, then she could still give the baby up for adoption. If she does this, she will further her baby’s life and make the people who adopt her baby happy. I argue that there are more benefits to going through with the pregnancy and having the baby than killing the baby which to me is morally wrong.

As stated in the article, abortion is a moral and political issue that is inescapable. I believe that it is a woman’s duty to have her baby and avoid abortion, no matter what the situation. I strongly argue that abortion is not right because people should care for all of humanity as both means and ends. A baby is part of humanity and should not just be used as a means, but as an ends as well. It is strictly the mother’s duty not to abort her baby but choose life for her baby. In conclusion, I feel that Obama is taking abortion to the extreme and needs to rethink his views in order to better explain them to America.
