Obama and Death Penalty

Being an Illinois state senator, Barack Obama played a significant role in changing the state’s death penalty. "Without Barack's energy, imagination and commitment I do not believe the very substantial and meaningful reforms that became law in Illinois would have taken place,”. In 2003, the changes that were made were able to save the lives of 13 people who were sentenced to death row. They were released because it was determined later on that they were either innocent or were convicted using improper methods.
An instance like this one shows how much Obama cares and how he is committed to resolving issues like these. I agree with Obama’s position on the death penalty. He was able to save the lives of 13 innocent men. Without his enthusiasm, these men would probably be dead. Obama refuses to neglect needed changes, but he has also demanded certain compromises from both law enforcement and death penalty critics. This would include a proposal to require that police record interrogations of murder suspects.
As a result of prior murder victims, the families of them felt betrayed while lawmakers were worried that they would be criticized of being “soft on crime”. All of this shows how much Obama cares as he expresses his anger towards the fact that it was possible that innocent victims were being wrongfully accused and as a result, killed. He expresses that he has compassion even towards possible murderers. He is not making it so that capital punishment is lenient, he is just ensuring that it is fair and does not make any mistakes that can cost an innocent persons life. Obama seems to be on the right track with having a plan to solve current issues and provide a better nation.
